The Advisor Who Questioned My Future

During freshman orientation, I sat across from an academic advisor who studied my ACT scores carefully.

After a long pause, he said, “Engineering may not be the right path for you.”

It landed hard.

I left discouraged—but resolved. I remember telling my father that evening that I intended to prove otherwise.

Four years later, I completed my degree in Agricultural Engineering. Soon after, I returned to that same department as an academic advisor—serving alongside the very person who had doubted my prospects.

I don’t share that story with bitterness. I share it because it taught me something lasting:

Offhand comments can echo for decades.Encouragement—or its absence—can redirect confidence.

Since then, I’ve tried to measure my words carefully, especially with students and colleagues at pivotal moments.

Sometimes the most powerful gift we offer isn’t strategy.

It’s conviction in someone’s potential.
